[article's update July 6, 2010] Thanks to this YouTube video, I've finally found the real image (below) of the giant hydraulic SHEARS used by BP to CUT (forever) "like a piece of butter" the 21" strong oil riser, and, from its logo, I've found also the company that produces them, the model (GXP 2500) of shears used in the BP operations under sea and its detailed dimensions and specs.
Please note, in the image below, that the blade isn't welded to the shears, but blocked by a set of bolts, then, it would been VERY QUICK AND EASY to remove the blade and replace it with another strong flat side to "squeeze" the oil riser, rather than cut it!!!
[article's update July 4, 2010] In April 20 the BP's Deepwater Horizon rig has exploded, burned and sinked after a big oil and methane leak not stopped in time by the wellhead's Blow-Out Preventer (BOP) due to a series of human mistakes and negligences, wellhead's malfunctions and bad (or lack of) maintenances, then, thousands barrels of oil per day have started gushing in the sea from the, 5000 ft. deep, damaged oil riser.
While they deliberately lied (for over six weeks) about the real amount of oil spilled daily in the Gulf from its oil wellhead (only "1,000 barrels", as said in the early days, then "5,000 barrels", as claimed for weeks, then "30-60,000 barrels", as admitted very later, after many independent studies, then, finally, up to "100,000 barrels" per day, as stated in a leaked internal BP's document, in June) in May, the BP officials and technicians have made four attempts to try to (NOT ONLY) stop the oil leak, but, ALL aimed to (ALSO and ALWAYS) collect the valuable oil spilled, WITHOUT close the well.
All these four attempts (the giant 120 tons dome, the, built but not used, smaller dome, the probe inserted in the oil riser and the "top kill" method) have failed their goal, so, the BP guys, have decided (at the end of May) to CUT the oil riser using a giant and powerful hydraulic SHEARS (that cutted the 21" very strong riser like a piece of butter) a tool completely unknown before to politicians, Coast Guard, journalists and common people, but, by always, WELL KNOWN by ALL oil companies, by ALL oilmen and, of course, by BP, to (try to) "close" the oil wellhead with an (small, USELESS and FAILED) "containment cap" and collect all the gushing oil.
About a week later the oil riser cut, while I was watching again one of the BP's videos of the giant shears in action, I've realized that one or more of these (easily modified) giant BP's tools (completely unknown before, to me and to 99,99% of you, but WELL KNOWN to the BP guys) would been PERFECT to SQUEEZE the leaking oil riser (in one or more points) to STOP (or reduce by 80-90%) the (100,000 barrels per day) oil leak, from the EARLY DAYS of the accident, then, AVOIDING ENTIRELY to spill in the Gulf over 10,000,000 barrels (or over 400,000,000 gallons) of oil (from early May to mid-August when the two relief wells should stop the leak) and keep ALL the Gulf sea, its shores, the wildlife and its economy saved from the killer oil!!!!!
So, in June 9, I've updated this article (see below) with a video of the oil riser cut and talking about my discovery and my thought, regarding how quickly and easily BP would been able to STOP the oil leak and SAVE the Gulf from the EARLY DAYS (using its giant SHEARS) but hasn't done it and has also HIDDEN for over a month the pure existence of its giant SHEARS to everybody, including the US government and the Cost Guard!!!
Despite I've found VERY STRANGE that NO ONE of the journalists, bloggers, newspapers, press agencies and TVs of the world (that have ALL seen the video of the riser cut) had made my same discovery about the BP's tool, I've posted HUNDREDS of comments and links on the most important news sites and blogs and emailed HUNDREDS journalists, newsrooms, editors and bloggers, but, again, NO ONE OF THEM (still now, three weeks after my emails) has reviewed my discovery nor written an article about that!!!
While, the reason (a 2 billion barrels reserve, $150+ billion value) why BP has hidden the pure existence of the giant shears to everybody us and hasn't used these tools to "squeeze" the oil riser in the EARLY DAYS are absolutely CLEAR to me, what I don't understand, is WHY the Press hasn't seen the same thing and has (also) COMPLETELY IGNORED my comments on their blogs and ALL my emails about a so important news!!!
Maybe... ALL journalists, bloggers and newsrooms, NEVER read the comments on their blogs and the emails they receive, or... ALL the newspapers and TVs are NO LONGER interested to publish scoops, or... in realty, ALL them have FEAR of the 3rd company of the world (for revenue) and prefer to "believe" that BP has sincerely made ALL the humanly possible attempts to stop the Gulf oil spill...???
Anyhow, in the following image I published today, you can see how fast, simple, easy and cheap would been for BP to modify its giant shears to allow it to "squeeze" the oil riser, rather than cut it forever!
[article's update June 26, 2010] The hurricanes are coming soon in the Gulf and when they'll come the (already bad) containment cap MUST be unplugged from the wellhead, since, the ship that collects the oil, can't remain there with an hurricane, so, the oil will flow from the well at 100,000 barrels per day!!!!!
BP Spill Ops To Evacuate 5 Days Before Storm-Force Winds, so, it needs five days to unplug the containment cap and evacuate the storm site, a couple of days for the storm, a couple of days to come back on site and one day to replug the containment cap = 1,000,000 more barrels of oil freely spilled in the ocean... and this is only the FIRST storm, and not the worst... WHAT are they waiting to listen those who have the RIGHT IDEAS AND SOLUTIONS to STOP the oil spill QUICKLY, to SAVE the sea, shores, nature and wildlife, BEFORE they'll be submerged by over 250,000,000 more gallons of oil in the next TWO months????? ..."two months", if lucky, since, the BP chief Tony Hayward has said (in his testify) that, BP "...cannot guarantee the outcome of these operations..."!!!!!
Personally, I'm seriously thinking to stop to update my article with further new ideas (that I have) to solve the oil spill issue and to "wash" the ocean and the shores without toxic dispersants, since, it's completely useless to talk (and suggest the right things) if no one (not BP nor the Press) listen you... :[
[article's update June 21, 2010] In the past TWO months (and also in the next TWO months) BP has adopted (or will adopt) ONLY its own (and ALL failed) "methods" COMPLETELY IGNORING all the (HUNDREDS) ideas and suggestions (can, ALL them, be wrong???) that they have (FALSELY) asked for, from experts and common people, and now, an internal BP document reveals, that, up to 100,000 barrels of oil per DAY has been/will be spilled in the ocean!!!
The BP's "ask for ideas" is a TOTAL LIE (like its "only 5,000 barrels spilled per day" claim... now 100,000) so the 500,000,000 gallons of oil (already gushed or that will be spilled in the ocean in the next months) will be a complete BP's responsibility, since, it would AVOIDED, if BP would adopt one of the dozens possible ideas able to STOP the oil spill, from the EARLY DAYS, like "crimping" the damaged oil riser (see the idea below) using one or more of their giant SHEARS rather than cut the riser forever.
[article's update June 18, 2010] In this further update of my article, I wish to show you another idea, to solve the oil spill issue, that, at first glance, could seem crazy, but, after you read it, you might discover that it's not so crazy.
The idea is similar to my latest proposal, published below (just yesterday) but, instead of use the giant BP dome (whose dimensions, probably, aren't enough to cover and close entirely the wellhead) my suggestion is to use one of the Space Shuttle's External Tanks, yes, exactly one of the giant propellant's tanks you've seen flying, dozens times, in space with the Shuttle!!!
There are many reasons why a Shuttle ET could be (very probably) the best (if not the IDEAL) choice, to (finally) close the BP wellhead and stop the oil spill.
First of all, the Shuttle ET are ready available NOW (so we don't need to wait weeks or months to build one) since, three ETs, have been already built for the next two (or, perhaps, three) final Shuttle flight to be launched between the end of 2010 and the early months of 2011.
Second, a Shuttle ET should be big enough to perfectly fit the BP wellhead, since, it measures 153.8 ft (46.9 m) in lenght with an external diameter of 27.6 ft (8.4 m).
Third (and most important) reason, the Shuttle ET is a VERY STRONG container (that, however, can be further reinforced) since, an ET, is designed and built to resist to the VERY HIGH internal pressure and VERY LOW temperatures of the LOX and LH2 cryogenic propellants, also, it can resist to the VERY HIGH external pressure of the atmosphere, while it flies at thousands miles per hour to reach the space!
Last but not the least, the ET doesn't need to be sent from Houston or Cape Canaveral, since, the Shuttle ETs, are built at the NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility (where, at least one ET, should be available now) that is a few miles from New Orleans and less than 200 miles away from the accident site!!!
Of course, the ET (below) needs some simple and quick changes and additions (that I will explain soon in my next update of this article) to being successful used in that job, but, again, be so near the Michoud Assembly Facility will be a big advantage and a big time-saving opportunity, not forgetting the help that may come from the great experience of the skilled NASA's engineers that work in this facility!!!
And, clearly, all the costs and expenses of this operation must be paid in advance by BP.
[article's update June 17, 2010] The "second giant BP's mistake" in this tragic story surely was to don't use their (modified) monster hydraulic shears to squeeze, bend and close the oil riser in the EARLY DAYS (as explained in below in this article) to STOP up to 100% of the oil leak from the beginning, but the "first giant BP's mistake" undoubtly has been the incredible and irresponsable decision to CUT that riser, so, all the simple, cheap and fast solutions to stop the oil spill, using the ready available giant shears, wouldn't been no longer possible to adopt!!!
However, since all the worst possible mistakes has been already made, the only way to solve this problem is to adopt one of the (very few) solutions, that, the situation, as it has became now, allows.
So, one of my latest suggestions (see the following image) is to reuse the giant 120 tons "dome" built by BP for the first (failed) attempt to stop the oil leak at the end of the riser and put that dome on the wellhead to cover and close the entire wellhead, instead than (only) on the cutted riser's stump, as is happening in the (largely failed) current attempt to fix the problem.
Of course, since, the giant BP dome, has already failed its attempt to collect and pump up the spilled oil, it must be reused ONLY to CLOSE the wellhead and STOP the oil leak.
Unfortunately, I don't know (so I can't say) IF the giant dome built by BP can really be reused for the new purpose, since, despite BP has diffused worldwide its "ask for ideas and solutions" to solve the oil spill issue (a clear PR-trick to gain time and "save the wellhead" and its oil) BP has NEVER released, so far, ANY detailed info and data about the wellhead, its dimensions and materials, how it works, what safety devices it has, the spilling oil pressure, the dimensions, section, materials and resistance of the (now cutted) riser, etc. while, the ONLY figure revealed by BP ("5,000 barrels per day" of oil leaked) was been a bit "underestimated"... just 10-15 TIMES LESS of the real amount... :[
Clearly, if the already existing dome is too small or too short or not enough large, a new dome should be quickly built, but, also if build the new dome will need a week or so, it will ANYHOW be better than wait mid-july or mid-august to (just) try the (only) two other "solutions" proposed by BP and of which (as BP's CEO Tony Hayward has just said today) BP "...cannot guarantee the outcome..."!!!
[article's update June 12, 2010] The latest evaluations about the amount of oil spilled (for nearly two months, so far) from the damaged wellhead is of at least 40,000 barrels every day (compared with the only 5,000 barrel per day figure stated by BP in the early days or the 20,000 barrels per day admitted very later...) that, at the current market price (around $75 per barrel) equals a value of over $3,000,000 lost every day or over $90,000,000 lost monthly or over $500 million lost if the BP well should remain closed (only) six months.
These (just updated) figures (clearly) shows (and are the best evidence of) the reasons why BP has (always and completely!) ignored (and NEVER adopted) ALL the ideas and suggestions to just CLOSE the damaged wellhead (and QUICKLY STOP the oil spill in the Gulf) while it has adopted ONLY methods (always failed) able to stop the leak AND (also) "save the OIL" then pump up that oil on the surface and SELL it, that, excluding only the "perfect method" called "top kill" (strangely) failed (and abandoned) after just a couple of days...
Well, since BP seems (absolutely) want to save its oil wellhead, rather than (just) close it (and save the ocean and the nature!) in this update of my latest idea, I propose a new, larger and much better "super cap" able to stop nearly 100% of the oil leak but also to pump the oil on surface and store it in the BP's tankers.
The "super cap" must have two to four vents (EACH of them able to allow the FULL oil flow, to have the lower possible internal pressure) all with closing valves kept open, when the cap is installed, then closed, to stop the oil spill, and later, joint to one or more new riser(s).
This design change is (also) necessary because the early version (proposed in the June 6 update of this article) can't fit perfectly to the wellhead top since, the cutted riser plug, has some big bolts in the place, where, the first version of (my design) cap should have been soldered.
The new, simple and cheap "super cap" (shown in the image below) could be built and installed in a couple of days, matching the (just arrived to BP) official warning (sent by the US Coast Guard) that asks BP to explain how to solve the problem within 48 hours!!!
The ONLY other alternative to this SIMPLE and FAST solution, is to wait the new system that BP plans to install in mid-july, when, OVER 1,200,000 barrels (OVER 50,000,000 gallons) of more oil will be spilled in the ocean!!!!!!
READ HOW BP WOULD BEEN ABLE TO STOP THE OIL SPILL FROM THE EARLY DAYS!!!
[article's update June 9, 2010] When I've decided to write this article (last May 10) my knowledge of the problem of the BP oil well and of the right ways and tools to stop the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, was nearly zero, like (I suppose) those of great part of the people that has followed this disaster on the media.
That's why my first idea to solve the oil spill issue (BEFORE fill the entire Gulf of Mexico and to leak also in the Atlantic ocean) was to BURN the leaking oil, pumping oxygen at 5000 ft. while, just a few days later I've realized (but I've not updated the article) that was better to (simply) pump up air from surface (but more) to sustain the flame.
So, after the first idea, I've decided to try to develop BETTER ideas able to definitely STOP the oil leak and NOT only able to burn it under sea to avoid the destruction of the Gulf's sea and of its shores, nature, birds, fishes, tourism, economy, etc.
That's why all the new ideas that I've developed BEFORE the oil riser cut (the cube of concrete, the inflatable balloon, the conical plug and the smaller block of concrete to squeeze the riser) were aimed to the goal to STOP the oil leak as soon as possible.
Needless to say, that, despite having proposed these ideas everywhere (several times on the DHR Facebook Page) BP has completely ignored them and continued to use the methods (all failed) it preferred (while the Gulf and the shores were filled by its oil) because these was good to save its OIL WELL, rather than the sea and the nature!!!
Then, in June, when BP has decided to CUT the oil riser (in two different points, near the wellhead top and some dozens feet away from it) to put its "cap" on the well top (again, to collect its oil...) I've made a VERY BAD and VERY SAD discovery (that I would never imagined before not being an expert in oil wells that knows all the tools available for these works) while I was watching the live video of the oil riser cut operations (see the YouTube video below) that BP has ALWAYS had the RIGHT TOOL to STOP the oil spill from the early days!!!!!!!!!
The "tool" is a giant hydraulic SHEARS able to CUT in a few minutes (despite the high internal pressure of the oil flow!) the 21 inches diameter (and VERY strong!!!) oil riser like a piece of butter without have secondary leaks on the wellhead or on the riser!!!!!
So, the (very very fast and very very simple) solution to STOP the oil spill (from the EARLY DAYS) would been to modify a bit its giant and powerful hydraulic shear to gently squeeze (and keep squeezed) the oil riser to STOP the oil leak (completely or by over 95%) and to avoid (nearly ENTIRELY) the current disaster in the Gulf of Mexico!!!!!!
[article's update June 8, 2010] The BP wellhead still continue to spew millions gallons of oil per day (it look like the flames and smoke that came out from the Twin Towers on 9/11) but there's a good news, since, BP Plans to Replace Containment Cap Next Month, because, the "Company [BP] Believes a Bigger Cap Will "Provide a Better, Tighter Fit over Oil Well Blowout at the Bottom of the Gulf of Mexico".
That's very good... but... hey, BP, this is (exactly) MY IDEA (below) that I've published two days ago on this blog, then, posted hundreds times (or sent via email) on several news sites and blogs on the Web, like: CBS, CNN, ABC, DHR Facebook Page, BBC, WSJ, Bloomberg, BusinessWeek, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, NYT, etc. etc. etc. !!!!!
So, thanks BP to have (finally!) decided to adopt MY VERY GOOD IDEA, but, NOT SO THANK for having waited so much to adopt MY ideas and to haven't acknowledged me as the inventor of this idea... :[
Unfortunately, BP will adopt MY idea only next month, probably because my (very simple and FAST to build and apply) concept (surely) CAN stop the oil spill, but, also, CLOSES the wellhead forever, while, BP likely wants to build a (more complex) new and larger "cap", able to stop the leak AND (also) to "save the OIL" to pump it inside its ships...
[article's update June 6, 2010] While the BP guys say "the cap works well" collecting half of the oil spilled every day, the BP wellhead still gushes oil copiously, and, from the live video of the oil well, I don't see absolutely any difference in the leak today from first day when the "cap" has been plugged in the well's top!
Well, also assuming the BP statements (half of the spilled oil collected by the cap) as true... might, the BP well, spill over 10,000 barrels of oil per day for the next THREE MONTHS without dramatic and irreversible consequences for the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic ocean, their nature and the economy of the States in the area?
The answer, clearly, is "NO", so, BP should change its strategy NOW adopting a solution able to STOP in a FEW DAYS up to 100% of the oil leak and forever!!!
Well, since it's absolutely clear that, also the wellhead's "cap" has FAILED to accomplish its mission, the wisest decision is to abandon NOW this WRONG solution (without wait more days or weeks!) and start NOW to build (and to adopt quickly!) the device shown in the image below.
It's a sort of new, but very short, oil riser (with a closing "valve" inside it) strong as the older and large enough to perfectly fit the cutted riser (that, I would remember, is very damaged and with a irregular shape) and insert it instead of the failed "cap" with its valve OPEN, then, solder carefully this pipe at its base and CLOSE the valve, to STOP up to 100% of the oil leak forever.
There are many ways to design a simple, very strong and reliable valve for the pipe (so far, I've developed three different concepts) that, if my idea will be adopted, I'll be happy to draw and show to those who should build the device.
[article's update June 4, 2010] Despite the optimistic claims BP has clearly failed again to stop the oil spill, since, 45 days after and four different methods adopted, also the "cap" used this night hasn't solved the problem, because, only 6000 barrels (or less than 30% of the 20,000 barrels spewed every day from the BP well) is now collected by the cap's top pipe, while, now, BP aims (read: "hopes") to contain "90%" of the oil leak (that STILL gushes copiously from the cap bottom and will increase very much when the four vents atop the "containment" cap will be closed) but, also assuming the leak will fall to 10-30%, it, anyway, means, that several millions more gallons will be spilled in the Gulf of Mexico and in the Atlantic ocean until the new well will be finished in mid-August (as "promised" by BP...) to divert the oil flux from the damaged well.
The true reason of the 45 days delay to stop the oil spill is entirely due to the fact that the BP's main/only goal ALWAYS was/is/will be to SAVE its OIL and its $5-8 billion per year BUSINESS in the Gulf's oil extraction, rather than (simply) CLOSE the wellhead and STOP the oil spill to SAVE the SEA.
This is (also) the reason why BP has ALWAYS refused or ignored (and NEVER adopted) ALL other cheaper, easier and FASTER ways to (only) CLOSE the damaged riser without pump up and SELL its oil, like those I've suggested from May 10 (here and everywhere on the Web) sent to BP and posted on the Deepwater Horizon Response Facebook Page (often REMOVED by the BP/DHR page's Admin...) and different ideas proposed by many other people including the help offered (and quickly REFUSED by BP) a few days ago by Avatar's director James Cameron and by his team of deep ocean experts and explorers!!!
BP has always chosen ONLY very complex methods that would (perhaps) able to stop the oil spill but (mainly) able to SAVE its OIL, send it to the sea surface and SELL, so, they've NEVER listen (or completely ignored) all my warnings and concerns (explained here, in the May 21 article's update, and posted dozens times on the DHR Facebook Page and on dozens of the most important blogs on the Web!) and has proceeded (with a total indifference for the consequence) in the oil riser cut making nearly ALL the other alternative (cheaper, simpler and faster) ways to stop the oil leak (like those proposed here) simply IMPOSSIBLE to adopt now!!!
However, despite I'm SURE that BP still won't listen any suggestion from me or other, I've developed a further, cheap and simple idea to quickly CLOSE the wellhead and to STOP NOW up to 100% of the oil leak, and NOT only the, expected/hoped, "90%" using the (current) BP's "cap" system.
My new idea (shown in the image below) uses a TRUE cap (without any kind of pipe to gather the oil) to be inserted in the cutted riser on the top of the wellhead to (finally and completely) CLOSE it.
IF and WHEN the oil spill problem will be solved and the leak definitely stopped, I've also some good ideas to wash the Gulf's sea without use any toxic dispersant, but, again, I doubt that BP will adopt these ideas... however, maybe, my ideas can be applied by the US or Gulf's States governments.
[article's update May 31, 2010] WARNING!!!!! Also the new method to be used by BP to (just try to) stop the oil spill (cut the oil riser, near the wellhead's top, and put a valve with a pipe to pump up the oil to surface) has the main goal to "save the BP oil" (like all other, failed, methods used so far) but, this time, if the second part of the attempt (plug the just cutted riser) will FAIL, there will be NO FAST OR EASY WAY to stop the oil spill for at least TWO-THREE MONTHS (leaking up to 300,000,000 more gallons of oil in the Gulf and in the Atlantic ocean!) since, without the riser, BP can't no longer adopt other, simpler, methods to stop the leak, like those shown here.
They CAN stop the oil spill within TWO DAYS but they DID NOT WANT to do that!!!!!!!!
[article's update May 29, 2010] There are contradictory rumors on the press about the success or failing of the "top kill" attempt to stop the oil spill, but, great part say that it's close to FAIL or at least it might need much more time than expected to close the oil wellhead (maybe, several weeks) in which that leak could spill in the ocean one million of gallons of oil per day or more!!!
And, if the "top kill" attempt will fail, the ONLY way to close the leaking wellhead, is to make another drilling to divert the oil flux, a long and complex operation that needs two-three months, leaving, to the oil leak, enough time to cover the entire Gulf and part of the Atlantic ocean with a thick and dense layer of petroleum!!!
To avoid a planetary disaster, BP should STOP the "top kill" attempt to try something BETTER or, at least, START NOW to develop a "Plan-B" to be adopted in case the "top kill" will go wrong.
In my opinion, THE SIMPLEST AND FASTEST WAY TO KILL THE OIL SPILL TOMORROW is a NEW and BETTER version of an idea that I've published here (and posted everywhere on the Web and dozens times also on the Deepwater Horizon Response's Facebook Page) in/from May 15, that uses a giant and heavy block of concrete to "squeeze" the oil riser and STOP immediately the oil leak!!!
The only (but VERY VERY IMPORTANT) difference with the older version of my idea, is that, the block of concrete won't be placed at the end of the damaged oil riser but at its middle, in the most solid and rocky ground point possible (or, better, in two different points) also, the shape of the block's bottom won't be squared and sharp (to avoid the risk to cut the oil riser) but must be slighty rounded, as shown in the image below, with one or two curves.
Despite the BP's crane could sustain a block of over 120 tons, the cube won't need to be so big and heavy, but just enough to "squeeze" the oil riser and stop the oil spill.
My suggestion is to accomplish a test with a piece of riser, of the same dimensions and the same kind of the leaking riser, before place it under sea, to know the optimal weight to "squeeze" it, then, multiply that weight by two, three or more, to consider the pressure of the oil inside the damaged riser.
When the oil leak will be stopped, he oil riser end could be washed with water then filled with tons of concrete inside and outside it.
[article's update May 24, 2010] The BP's "top kill" method may need up to ten days to (try to) stop the oil spill (IF it works properly) so, STOP the oil spill NOW closing the oil riser's leak!
In the next ten days up to 30,000,000 of more gallons of oil will be spilled in the ocean, and, 30,000,000 more gallons of oil spilled, means add 30,000,000+ gallons of TOXIC dispersant to (try to) absorb them!
Use the suggestions published here, to SOLVE the problem in A FEW HOURS, rather than WEEKS, or, according to this National Geographic article, in several years!
[article's update May 18, 2010] My latest, simplest, FASTEST and very cheap idea to STOP the oil spill in a couple of days (including the time to build the riser plug tool) is the device shown in the image below that is made as a strong rubber conical plug with a strong metal core to reinforce and manage the tool under sea.
This tool can easily close the riser since, at 5000 ft. deep, the pressure of the water is much higher than the pressure of the oil that flows out from the damaged pipe, then, when the plug is inserted and the oil leak ends, the entire area can be definitely covered with a pouring of concrete.
[article's update May 15, 2010] As direct derivative of the latest idea proposed by BP to stop the oil leak (that could have some issues) I propose a new, safer, faster and cheaper idea (better than, both, my old idea, below, and the BP idea) that uses a large inflatable balloon joined with a strong metal core to be inserted in the riser then inflated with compressed air or a mix of water and concrete to quickly close the hole and stop the oil leak.
Or... why don't (just) release a giant and heavy 200+ tons cube of concrete (or less heavy but enough for the purpose) on the top of the riser's end or its middle to squeeze the pipe's metal and stop or greatly reduces the oil leak in minutes???
My solution for Gulf of Mexico oil spill
This article is a bit off topic for a blog about spaceflights and spacecrafts, but the Gulf of Mexico's disaster is too important to ignore and to don't try find a solution, so, despite I'm not an expert of oil spills nor an oilman, I've decided to use my ingenuity in solving problems, to develop and propose MY idea to try to stop the oil leak.
As you can see in the image below, my idea is very simple but (I hope) very effective, since it only needs to pump oxygen (or air or a self igniting chemical product, at oil's contact) to the oil leaks places, then ignite the oil-oxygen mix to burn the oil under the sea well before it reaches the ocean's surface.
This will have several advantages, because it should...
1. stop immediately the giant flow of oil to the ocean surface,
2. melt the oil pipes' metal, thanks to the high temperatures of the oil burning,
3. cover the oil pipes and its leaks with a thick layer of residuals produced by burned oil,
4. keep the further oil leaked pollution within a few hundreds feet diameter area and 5000 ft. deep rather than hundreds by hundreds of miles of surface of the ocean and of the american coasts.
An option to this main idea could be to put a giant tank of oxygen near each oil leak and burn the oil there in a single moment, but, I'm not sure that all the oxygen will remain there enough time, without rise quickly to the sea surface.
Maybe, also a big amount of explosives blasted near the main wellhead could work.
